Headshot Crew is Peter Hurley's online coaching platform. It's the home of his headshot photography technique and the community of photographers learning from him. I've been the sole developer for over 15 years. That includes the backend running on Drupal, the Recurly subscription billing, the React Native mobile app, and the AWS infrastructure underneath it all.
The majority of the site is built around paid memberships, with most content paywalled for subscribers.
Membership and Courses
Members subscribe through Recurly to unlock access to Peter's custom video courses, private message boards, group chats, and live Zoom calls with him and his team. Subscription tiers and billing run through Recurly with automated upgrades, downgrades, and payment method switching.
Access to courses, message boards, and gated content is handled by the same custom product license system I built for Fstoppers, tying every purchase and subscription back to a member's account so they keep access to everything they've earned.
E-commerce and Events
Drupal Commerce powers the e-commerce layer, with an event calendar and ticketing system for the in-person workshops Peter hosts around the world. The same commerce setup handles standalone course purchases and one-off content access.
Community, Contests, and Gamification
Members share their work in private groups, submit galleries for review, and compete in weekly contests judged personally by Peter. The contest engine is the same custom-built system that powers contests on Fstoppers, adapted for HSC's review and judging workflow. A custom voting system lets members rank submissions and surface the best work.
A custom achievement and badge gamification system rewards members for milestones across the community, from first uploads and contest wins to years of participation.
Find a Photographer
A searchable directory lets the public find photographers trained in Peter's methodology. Each subscribed member can list their portfolio and location, and visitors can browse by region or search the map. It's both a benefit for members and a value-add for the public looking for a Hurley-trained shooter.
Mobile App
The same Drupal site powers a React Native mobile app for iPhone and Android. The app pulls everything (courses, content, subscriptions, community features) through Drupal's REST and JSON:API endpoints, so the experience stays in sync no matter where members access it.
